Hiking Travel Insurance

Our policy covers day walks, multi-day routes, and high-altitude treks up to 7,000 metres as standard. Whether you are walking the Tour du Mont Blanc, heading to Everest Base Camp, or exploring trails in Patagonia, emergency medical expenses up to £10 million, helicopter rescue where medically necessary, and trip cancellation are all included.

Remote trails mean limited access to medical facilities. If you are injured or fall ill on a route, we cover the evacuation and transport costs needed to get you to appropriate care.

Altitude and what hikers should know

Above 3,000 metres, altitude sickness is a common risk in mountain travel. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the most frequent form. More serious conditions, High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), can progress quickly and need urgent medical attention.

If descent or evacuation becomes necessary, those costs are covered within your emergency medical cover.

Practical cover

Hiking trips involve pre-paid logistics. Permits, hut bookings, guided trek fees, and transport connections are often non-refundable. If illness, injury, or another covered event prevents your trip from going ahead, cancellation cover applies to those irrecoverable costs up to £3,000.

Cover can be arranged for trips of up to 12 months, with no limit on countries visited.

Common questions.

Everything trekkers ask before hitting the trail.

What altitude is covered?

Cover includes trekking and hiking up to 7,000m automatically. Routes from 5,000m to 7,000m must be guided. Activity above 7,000m falls into technical mountaineering territory and sits outside the policy definition.

Is there a specific helicopter rescue excess in the policy?

Yes. The higher £500 excess only applies to helicopter rescue in Nepal.

Is altitude sickness covered?

Yes. We cover necessary medical expenses for altitude-related illness, including AMS, HACE, and HAPE. If medically necessary helicopter evacuation is required, it is covered under emergency medical cover. The higher £500 excess only applies to helicopter rescue in Nepal.

How does helicopter evacuation work?

If you're in a remote location and need emergency extraction, contact our 24/7 medical emergency assistance service as soon as possible. Medically necessary helicopter evacuation costs are covered under emergency medical cover. The higher £500 excess only applies to helicopter rescue in Nepal.

Can I buy insurance after starting my trek?

No. You need to buy your policy before you leave your home country.
